Genesis 4:1
וְ הָ אָדָם יָדַע אֶת חַוָּה אִשְׁתֹּו וַ תַּהַר וַ תֵּלֶד אֶת קַיִן וַ תֹּאמֶר קָנִיתִי אִישׁ אֶת יְהוָה
And the Red-one has perceived152 אֶת-Eve his woman, and she is conceiving and bearing אֶת-Spearhead,153 and saying, `I have bought154 a man אֶת-Yahweh.`155
| 155 | The Hebrew את- “near” (#854) is the same as a mark of accusative. The niqqud (vowel points) which were added are left off to differentiate the two interpretations. The verb to possess/acquire is typically found with the mark, “And he is possessing אֶת-a portion of the Field…” Genesis 33:19 literal Here the mark does not mean “from” though that is the traditional interpretation. Translators try to be sneaking by rendering it “by” because the alternate interpretation of “with Yahweh” sounds even more wrong. |
