| 1035 | God is Straight Strong’s #3478, Yisrael. Thought to be from sarah and el "God Strives." Its exact meaning has been debated for centuries. The word עוֹד means properly "a going around" and was never taken into consideration as to the meaning, but instead שרית "you have contended/striven" was used for the interpretation. The difference lies in the pointing of ש and the fact that יִשְׂרָ "yisra" is not from the root שרה "sarah" meaning "to persevere, contend". They look alike, but only in the case of two letters. The proper root would be ישר cf. Strongs #3477 yashar. To be straight, smooth, easy. Therefore the proper name ישראל would be pronounced Yishrael. In the Greek NT Ἰσραήλ "Israel" is just as irrelevant to the proper pronunciation as the Greek form "Jesus" is to the Hebrew "Yeshuah". Jacob's name meant "Heel Chaser". In his struggling and striving with God and with men (not against), he prevailed, and no longer chased around the circuit but found the straight way, and became as it were, straight, smooth, easy. |
