Genesis 11:29

וַ יִּקַּח אַבְרָם וְ נָחֹור לָהֶם נָשִׁים שֵׁם אֵשֶׁת אַבְרָם שָׂרָי וְ שֵׁם אֵשֶׁת נָחֹור מִלְכָּה בַּת הָרָן אֲבִי מִלְכָּה וַ אֲבִי יִסְכָּה

And Raised-Father and Snorter are taking to-themselves women,451 a name of a woman of Raised-Father is Noble-Lady,452 and a name of a woman of Snorter is Queen,453 built-one of Mountain, father of Queen and father of Beholder.454

“Woman” is from the Hebrew אֵֽשֶׁת eshet which is the form used for a taken woman which stands in contrast to ishah which would imply an un-taken or unattached woman. Hence this word has always been translated as wife. This is the first time it appears in the Hebrew Scriptures and it is found 97 times.

Sarai שָׂרַי means “ruler, chief” = noble lady. In the feminine (Strong’s #8297) from sarar (#8323) to have dominion, to bear rule. See note on Genesis 17:15. שָׁרָֽי Sharai is a name found in Ezra 10:40 that comes from #8324 sharar to be hostile.
